ABSTRACT

This module presents the design by calculation developed within the GRISPE project for profiles with a circular or a square hole. Holes in the flange of sheeting are often required for the passage of services. The holes may be circular or square and of different sizes. But the European Standard EN 1993-1-3 dealing with design rules for cold-formed members and sheeting does not cover profiles with a hole. The previous studies on profiles with a hole, found in the literature, do not give any data about moment resistance calculation but show that holes reduce the profile strenght locally and globally. Therefore a methodology to design by calculation the profiles with a circular or a square hole was developped. After this introduction of the topic and of the reason why this methodology was developed, this module first describes how this methodology was carried out. It presents the extensive test program of global behaviour of steel profiles, with and without a hole, which was performed in order to provide required data. It gives the results of the analysis of the testing: and the effect of circular or square hole on global behaviour. It also explains how to calculate (proposed amendment to CEN TC 250/SC3/WG3 EN 1993-1-3) the effective section of a profile flange with a circular or a square hole. And finally it gives the methodology to calculate the moment resistance of a profile with a hole in a flange. Last it introduces the excel sheet which was implemented to calculate span moment resistance for a profile with a circular or a square hole in the flange.

LEARNING GOALS

After the module, you will be able to …

  • remember why some profiles are with a hole
  • comprehend why the development of a design by calculation for profiles with a hole was necessary
  • apply the reduction factor ρ for a profile flange with a hole
  • … analyse the effect of a hole on global behaviour of a profile
  • calculate the effect of a hole on global behaviour of a profile
  • … evaluate the moment resistance of a profile with a hole
